I have no musical talent, and no real understanding of music other than what sounds good to my ears, but I listen to a lot of it. Some people are cranky until they get a coffee in the morning, I’m cranky until I listen to something I really love (preferably really loud, for an hour or two), it’s just how I function. One of my favourite bands, time of day regardless, is Queen. Obviously there are many, many reasons to love them, but this one is pretty high up my list:

They have love songs that don’t specify gender. At all.

For example:

Despite the random woman in the video, the song on it’s own doesn’t specify who’s singing it, or who it’s being sung to.

For me, that’s really quite special, because it’s rare that I find a song about love that feels universal. I want a love song that anyone could sing to anyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or other factors.

Maybe there is an entire niche of genderless music that I’ve yet to discover, or maybe I just notice it more with Queen because I want to, but it seems to me that there aren’t all that many bands that sing about love without getting into gender as often as Queen does. Not to say that all their songs are gender-neutral, but a good number are.

Now, it’s not that I dislike artists who specify genders, or think less of their music, I just really appreciate it when I find songs that have that elusive universal feeling.
